Abstract

A method for accurately measuring the coating weight of a chromate conversion coating for aluminum module caps eliminates the errors that are caused by the weighing and dissolution of the base aluminum. Chromate conversion coating provides aluminum module caps with improved adhesion to epoxy backseal and increased corrosion protection. The proposed method uses a colorimeter to quantify the yellow portion of the reflected spectrum from the chromate coating, as the yellowness of the coating is a direct function of the coating thickness. The method permits the immediate, nondestructive measurement of coating weight on the aluminum cap, thereby giving immediate feedback for quality control.
