Abstract

When receiving envelopes such as night bank deposits, it is known to print a sequence number on the envelope so as to be able to identify the envelope with other data entered at the keyboard of the depository. A problem with printing on deposit envelopes is that the envelope often contains bulky items, paper clips, etc., which present an uneven printing surface. This article contemplates obviating the need for printing on a deposit envelope by providing a magnetic stripe on the envelope which can be encoded as the envelope is received. Magnetic encoding requires less pressure than printing and, accordingly, the uneven contents of the envelope present less of a problem to magnetic encoding. Optionally, the envelopes can be contained in a stack in an automatic teller machine.

Optionally, the envelopes can be contained in a stack in an automatic teller machine. When a user enters transaction data indicating that an envelope deposit is desired, an envelope is issued to the user. In the process of issue, transaction data previously entered at the keyboard is encoded on the envelope prior to issuance and prior to any content having been placed in the envelope. After placing the deposit in the envelope, the already encoded envelope can be deposited without further encoding.
