Abstract

In composing pages for diverse visual presentations, the employment of an all-points-addressable (APA) medium, such as a video display terminal or an APA printer, requires addressing pel (picture element), or pixel, positions on each logical page. User friendliness can be enhanced by constructing logical placement boxes on the page having a plurality of relative placement reference points corresponding to reference placement points on text, graphics, pictures, and so forth, to be placed on the page relative to the box placement point. Selection of a placement point automatically biases the physical placement of the text, and so forth, within the box. The border width of the box determines the displacement of the text being placed from the box reference point.

The border width of the box determines the displacement of the text being placed from the box reference point. A box having a zero border width causes the text placement point to be overlayed on the corresponding box placement point. The figure shows a logical box having a placement point BP on a logical page to be visually presented. Nine relative text placement points are defined for each box. Points B0, B2, B4 and B6 are respectively located on the four corners of the box. Intermediate the corners, placement point B1, B3, B5 and B7, preferably located midway between the corners (no limitation thereto is required) allows centering text with respect to any line of the box. If the text is to be centered within the box, then center box point B8 is referenced.
