Abstract

This article describes a method for operating a computing apparatus for migrating a plurality of data sets to one or more target volumes. The space allocated on the target volume is an approximation of space required based on the characteristics of the source data set and volume. The method combines the steps of recognizing certain data set characteristics that indicate an empty data set, and allocating space on a new target direct-access storage device (DASD) volume, for the purpose of data migration. The prior-art IBM DASD Migration Aid only displays a warning message that an empty data set was encountered on the old source device, but no job control language (JCL) is generated to migrate it. An application expecting that data set on the new target DASD volume will not find it.

Migrate Empty Data Sets With Nonspecific Data Set Organizations

This invention pertains to the JCL create (JCLCREAT) function of the IBM DASD Migration Aid, performed by the AAMCR00 program and its associated modules. Referring to Fig. 1, the method of the invention for migrating data sets comprises the steps, performed for each data set to be migrated, of reading (2) the input volume table of contents (VTOC) for the data set to determine if date set organization (DSORG) is unsupported (4), if there is an unknown record format (RECFM) (6), and if the block size (BLKSIZE) equals zero (8); and responsive to DSORG being supported, or RECFM being unknown, or BLKSIZE equalling zero, generatin...
