Abstract

An enhancement of cathodoluminescence (as well as photoluminescence) of glasses is achieved by a cooperative effect of two rare earths combined. When a small amount of TbF3 is replaced by EuF3 in the glass of the composition 15Al(PO3)3 .50BaF2 .20YF3 .15TbF3, the cathodoluminescence efficiency can be increased as much as 50% in some cases. In the graph, the curves A and C show cathodoluminescence efficiency as a function of EuF3 content in the glasses of compositions, 15Al(PO3)3 . 50BaF2 .(35-x)YF3 .xEuF3 and 15Al(PO3)3 .50BaF2 .20YF3 .(15-x)TbF3 .xEuF3, respectively. For the sake of comparison, the curve B shows cathodoluminescence efficiency as a function of TbF3 content in the glass of the composition 15Al(PO3)3 .50BaF2 .(35-x)YF3 .xTbF3 .

.xTbF3 . The composition of the glass for the curve C is a partial replacement of TbF3 by EuF3 in the composition 15Al(PO3)3 .50BaF2 .20YF3 .15TbF3, which is indicated by the point P in the figure. The dashed line indicates the approximate upper limit that could be reached, with Tb-only inclusion. This level varies by the melting atmosphere, so that the vertical linear scale in the figure should be considered as only relative. When TbF3 was replaced by EuF3 1 mole %, the cathodoluminescence efficiency was enhanced by more than 50% in the glass of this composition. These luminescent glass compositions consist essentially of 10-20 mole % of Al(PO3)3, less than 20 mole % of TbF3, 45-55 mole % of alkaline e...
