Abstract

Fig. 1 shows a print electrode configuration wherein the anodes are isolated from each other by the combination of cathode plates A and C. The anodes are insulated from the cathode plates by the insulator B. This configuration is a practical embodiment of a coaxial configuration. The anodes are formed of a suitable material, such as platinum, rhodium or a RuO2/glass composite. The cathodes are made from materials such as nickel, RuO2/glass or TiC/glass. Insulator materials may be organic or glass depending on the conductor materials. Material combinations are very important. Fig. 2 shows the interconnection planes for connection to a fan-out, such as a flexible printed circuit. Fig. 3 shows some possible combinations of anode rows to yield higher density print heads.

Some advantages of this print head configuration are: 1) practical coaxial configuration, 2) provides required isolation of anodes, and 3) because the configuration is coaxial, anodes need not be grounded when not printing.
