Abstract

SPARTAN second level technology packages support printed circuit card assemblies and their associated electronics and hardware. SPARTAN packages are offered in two versions: I and I(R). SPARTAN I is a lightweight, stand-alone, one-position card-on-board assembly providing positive retention of card assemblies, signal cables, and power distribution cabling. Polarization features and manufacturing assembly aids insure simplified assembly and serviceability in a package of high reliability and low cost. SPARTAN I(R) incorporates all of the features and attributes of the SPARTAN I package, yet the hardware for this package is contained within a smaller outline, that is, within the outline of the standard 22-position board assembly used by the ELSI (Early Large-Scale Integration) technology.

SPARTAN second level technology packages support printed circuit card assemblies and their associated electronics and hardware. SPARTAN packages are offered in two versions: I and I(R). SPARTAN I is a lightweight, stand-alone, one-position card-on-board assembly providing positive retention of card assemblies, signal cables, and power distribution cabling. Polarization features and manufacturing assembly aids insure simplified assembly and serviceability in a package of high reliability and low cost. SPARTAN I(R) incorporates all of the features and attributes of the SPARTAN I package, yet the hardware for this package is contained within a smaller outline, that is, within the outline of the standard 22-position board assembly used by the ELSI (Early Large-Scale Integration) technology. The SPARTAN design is available in three high and six high configurations and can accept two wide and four wide printed wiring card assemblies. Both height card assemblies with and without top card connectors can be mixed in the six high configuration. In these SPARTAN packages, all cards, signal cables and power connectors are positively retained. Parts are polarized to insure correct assembly and orientation and they have "designed in" aids that assist in the assembly of the package, that is, color coding, molded-in instructions/nomenclature, handling aids and mating features. The GRAD torque driver is the only tool required for the assembly of SPARTAN Packages. All screws have been designed to fit this tool. Both packages (three and six high) incorporate identical design strategy to aid both user and manufacturer. As they become familiar with one size, they will automatically understand the other. The package is completely self-adjusting, eliminating the need for alignment or adjustment operations during assembly.
