Abstract

A compact office printer is designed with a simple front-feed top exit paper path. In addition, the printer can be placed on an automatic paper feed unit. This automatic paper feed unit will supply paper at the front entrance of the printer and catch paper exiting out the top of the printer. In addition, the exiting printed cut sheets will be stacked in the proper sequence. As shown above, printer 10 has a print head 12 that moves on rails 14 and 16 across the width of the cut-sheet document being printed. A paper sheet to be printed upon enters at slot 18 and must be pushed forward until it is engaged between nip roller 20 and drive roller 22. Rollers 20 and 22 then index the paper sheet line by line up past the print head 12.

Compact Printer With Automatic Paper Feed

A compact office printer is designed with a simple front-feed top exit paper path. In addition, the printer can be placed on an automatic paper feed unit. This automatic paper feed unit will supply paper at the front entrance of the printer and catch paper exiting out the top of the printer. In addition, the exiting printed cut sheets will be stacked in the proper sequence. As shown above, printer 10 has a print head 12 that moves on rails 14 and 16 across the width of the cut- sheet document being printed. A paper sheet to be printed upon enters at slot 18 and must be pushed forward until it is engaged between nip roller 20 and drive roller 22. Rollers 20 and 22 then index the paper sheet line by line up past the print head 12. Sensor 24 detects the presence of paper to activate the pinch rollers 20 and 22 that feed the paper past the print head 12. In addition, when the sensor detects the trailing edge of the paper sheet, rollers 20 and 22 are driven long enough for the sheet to exit and be under control of the exit feed rollers 26 and 28 in exit chute 30. Driven by exit rollers 26 and 28, the sheet moves into exit pocket 32 where the sheets are stacked in the same sequence as they are printed. Automatic sheet feeding from a paper supply starts with picking roller 34 in paper supply tray 36. Guide 38 guides paper sheets picked by roller 34 to entrance slot 18 of the printer. Feed rollers 40 and 42, at the top of guide 3...
