Abstract

This apparatus provides an operator-selectable faceplate optical filter integrated with a display screen assembly. It allows the operator to conveniently adjust the display background for the desired contrast, or to alter the color of the display, or both. Fig. 1 shows a CRT with a standard transmission faceplate 10. To the front of the CRT is attached a unit 12 incorporating a continuous strip 14 with various levels of transmission, wound around two spindles 16, 18 carried by 12. Fig. 2 shows strip 14, which is dimensioned such that the display area of the CRT is totally covered by a segment of it when the strip is properly indexed by operation of spindles 16, 18. Operation of spindles 16, 18 is by a mechanism (not shown) controllable externally of the unit by the operator.

Various options are available: 1. If contrast selection only is required, any color phosphor could be used in the CRT together with a neutral transmission strip 14 of varying density.
2. Alternatively, the strip 14 could be a selectable bandpass filter to enhance the brightness of the CRT spot. 3. If different colors are desired, a white phosphor on the CRT along with color variations on the strip 14 can be used.
