Large Diameter Cassette Tape Spools

Large diameter data cassette tape spools are provided in a standard size including a standard spool diameter. This spool diameter is maintained regardless of the length of tape to be wound on the spool.

Within boundaries governed by inventory factors and pool costs in general, the diameter of a tape spool should vary inversely according to the length of tape to be stored thereon. In other words, as the tape length decreases, the spool diameter should increase. A larger diameter spool will wrap a proportionately longer length of tape per revolution, thus decreasing rewind time for a given length of tape.

Larger spool diameters would also produce advantages by decreasing backlash at the end of tape, and would give more linear tape count.

Variation in diameter could be effected by resort, for example, to stocking different sizes, or by use of expandable cones, or, again, by selectively changeable sleeves fitting over a basic spool core.
