An alternate manufacturing process is described for manufacturing cams that have an aluminum surface and require an inserted bearing.

Aluminum cams have less inertia and are easier to machine than steel cams. The insertion of bearings, however, is complicated by the difference in the coefficients of expansion of the bearing material, usually steel, and the aluminum alloy comprising the cam body. This results in having to glue the bearing in the cam with the consequent problems of centering and parallel positioning.

To overcome the latter problem, the cam is made of steel into which the bearing can be press-fitted in the usual way. This allows more precise positioning and fewer failures. The cam surface, however, is difficult to machine.

To provide an easily worked cam surface, the surface of the steel cam is flame-sprayed with aluminum to a thickness sufficient to accept the required milling. The basic flame-spraying process is illustrated in the figure.

Since the cam and the bearing are of the same material, they have the same coefficient of expansion. The stainless steel body is more stable dimensionally and the bearing can be pressed into it. Rejected cams can be resprayed and reworked, and the bearing can be easily replaced. Since there is no check of the glue bond without destructive testing, a more reliable unit is produced by the described method.
