Abstract

The end of a magnetic tape from a supply reel in a cartridge can be located and positioned in place for attachment to a leader block by the use of a swinging arm. The arm includes a resilient end that contacts the tape and smooths the tape into a channel. The length of the tape is then checked. If the end is too short for connection to the leader block, the tape is blown away from the channel and the arm again sweeps to place the tape into the channel for retesting its length.

The end of a magnetic tape from a supply reel in a cartridge can be located and positioned in place for attachment to a leader block by the use of a swinging arm. The arm includes a resilient end that contacts the tape and smooths the tape into a channel. The length of the tape is then checked. If the end is too short for connection to the leader block, the tape is blown away from the channel and the arm again sweeps to place the tape into the channel for retesting its length.

As shown in Figure 1, in the manufacturing process for a magnetic tape cartridge 1, the end of the tape 2 needs to be positioned for connection to a leader block (not shown). The cartridge is positioned at the station after the end of the tape 2 is cut to length. A transport rail 3 includes a channel 4 for clearance of the tape as the cartridge 1 is transported between a processing station and a slot 5 which lets the end of the tape 2 drop through. A larger opening 6 is provided for clearance of the leader block as the end of the tape is drawn back into the cartridge 1. Figure 2 shows the locater mechanism beneath the positioned cartridge 1 for smoothing and locating the end of the tape.

In Figure 2, the locater mechanism includes a swinging arm 7 having a resilient padding 8 at its end. The arm swings against a block 9 and carries the end of the tape 2 over a block 10. Figure 3 shows the side view of the position of the arm 7 and the blocks 9 and 10. Figure 4 shows a close-up of the positioning of the end of the tape 2 within the channel 11 of the block 9.
