N-butylamine is converted into a derivative which can easily be detected using gas chromatography techniques. In this way low levels (ppm) of n- butylamine can be detected.

A low-level concentration n-butylamine gas stream is passed through a series of gas traps containing a solution mixture of toluene and trifluoroacetic anhydride. The derivative of the n-butylamine which is dissolved in the solution is then quantitatively analyzed using gas chromatography.
