Abstract

This article describes fastening apparatus for joining a deformable member, such as a plastic or brass hub of a gear, pulley, etc., to a shaft. A threaded pin is inserted through a threaded hole in the shaft and into an interference hole in the deformable hub to lock the pin in place. The undersized hole is deformed as the pin (screw) is inserted. This deformation increases the area of contact with the screw, and also provides an ample friction lock for the screw. Unlike more conventional joining methods, the torque transmitted through this joint places the screw in simple shear, and is therefore independent of the screw's tightness.

The figure shows a common screw 10 inserted through a tapped hole in shaft 11 into an interference hole 12 in deformable hub 13 of gear, pulley, etc. 14. The hub 13 is flattened for screw access at side 15.

The torque capacity of this joint is considerably greater than the more conventional setscrew on a flatted shaft, even assuming that the setscrew is threaded into a hole tapped in steel.
