Suspension Attachment by Hollow Rivets

A method of attaching a magnetic head suspension 1 to an access arm 2 is described in which hollow rivets 3 are used for attachment.

The first step in the method is to position the suspension 1 in proper alignment with the arm 2. The rivets 3 are then picked up from a feeder, not shown, with a setting anvil 4 and placed through the matching holes in the suspension 1 and arm 2. The setting mandrel is pushed down thereby applying a force (denoted by arrows 5) to the rivet head so that the peripheral edge of the rivet acts as a spring which clamps the suspension 1 tight to the arm 2. The spreader 6 is then pulled up (denoted by arrow 7) thereby spreading the split mandrel 8. This motion sets the rivet 3 thereby holding the suspension 1 securely to the arm 2.
