Elimination of Start-Up Problems of Drop-on-Demand Ink Jets

A method is described for elimination of start-up problems in an ink jet drop- on-demand printing system in which a heater near the nozzle is energized when starting the printing system after an extended period of shutdown.

Commonly used ink formulations for ink jet drop-on-demand printing include ethylene glycol, but these formulations have the disadvantage that, on most paper, severe feathering occurs. To reduce the feathering and drying time, water-based inks have been developed. Although the print quality of these inks is substantially better than ethylene glycol-based inks, severe start-up problems may be encountered. For example, if the print head is shut down for hours or days, it is often not possible to eject any drops unless a water rinsing of the front surface of the nozzle plate is performed.

Elimination of the start-up problem is produced by heating the ink in the immediate neighborhood of the meniscus prior to start-up. The heating can be produced by either a heating coil or a film or planar heating element deposited near the nozzle. A small current is sufficient to permit drops to be ejected from the nozzle after a shutdown of several days, even though, without heating, no drops were ejected.
