Abstract

For testing a channel to channel adapter in manufacturing, a tester is connected to the adapter and to the maintenance device that in normal operation provides maintenance and diagnostics and customer engineering functions for the adapter. The tester simulates enough channels to operate the adapter at its maximum load and it simulates enough control units to test the ability of the adapter to transmit signals to other units on the channel to control the unit bus.

Tester for Channel to Channel Adapter

For testing a channel to channel adapter in manufacturing, a tester is connected to the adapter and to the maintenance device that in normal operation provides maintenance and diagnostics and customer engineering functions for the adapter. The tester simulates enough channels to operate the adapter at its maximum load and it simulates enough control units to test the ability of the adapter to transmit signals to other units on the channel to control the unit bus.

A channel to channel adapter is connected to several processors like the I/O device and control unit and it permits two processors to communicate with each other through their I/O systems. A processor can transmit a message by issuing write commands to the adapter, and a receiving processor can accept the message by issuing read commands to the adapter. The adapter must also communicate with other control units on the same I/O bus. A test must operate the adapter to perform these functions at normal data rates.

The tester has four channels and four control units and a controller. The four channels are connected to four of the eight ports of the adapter and are operated to produce messages on the channel bus for two simultaneous transmissions between two sending processors and two receiving processors.
