Flexible Supplemental Dictionary for a Spelling Correction Function

This publication describes a technique for providing a flexible supplemental dictionary for a spelling correction system by implementing the supplemental dictionary as a user created document which can be viewed and edited as required. "CREATE DOCUMENT OF SUPPLEMENTAL WORDS" task in the Spelling Task Selection Menu prompts the operator with a document name and a work diskette name in which the document of supplemental words will be contained.

After the setup is complete, the system either implicitly creates a document with its name specified by the operator if it does not exist in the specified diskette, or the named document will be opened and blanked out entirely. Words in the supplemental dictionary are read and decoded into character format with a set of defined rules used for the case resolution. The decoded character format words are stored one word per line in alphabetic order in the specified document. When all the words are done, the entire document is stored onto the specified work diskette.

This document is a bonafide text document that is ready for viewing, editing, adding and deleting words. A new supplemental dictionary can be created by applying a "LOAD SUPPLEMENTAL DICTIONARY" task to this document. A closed cycle for supplemental dictionary maintenance is thus completed.
