Abstract

A probe head assembly is required to electrically test the circuitry on metallized ceramic substrates. The probe head assembly necessitates an orderly and systematic means of holding and manipulating the fine wire probes during construction. The tiny probes, which usually number in the hundreds, must be positioned and firmly secured prior to final potting of the assembly. The probe is an assembly of a gold-plated solid tungsten rod riding inside a stainless steel tube joined at the top to a plastic barrel. The small tungsten rod is spring loaded and retracts into the stainless tube.

A probe head assembly is required to electrically test the circuitry on metallized ceramic substrates. The probe head assembly necessitates an orderly and systematic means of holding and manipulating the fine wire probes during construction. The tiny probes, which usually number in the hundreds, must be positioned and firmly secured prior to final potting of the assembly. The probe is an assembly of a gold-plated solid tungsten rod riding inside a stainless steel tube joined at the top to a plastic barrel. The small tungsten rod is spring loaded and retracts into the stainless tube.

The method of holding and positioning these individual probes is accomplished as follows: 1. Design a large matrix plate which will accommodate the

required number of probes and drill the proper size holes

in a pattern which is compatible with the solder pad

locations and the I/O pin head locations on a particular

substrate. This plate will accommodate the plastic barrel

at the top of the probe assembly.

2. Design and drill a small matrix plate which is identical

dimensionally to the substrate footprint. This small

matrix plate will accommodate the tubes.

3. Join the top and bottom matrix plates by providing two side

supports.

4. The probe assembly is fed down through the upper matrix

plate until the plastic barrel portion locks into the

designated hole. The plastic barrel has a taper and

locks tightly into the matrix plate.
