Portable/ Removable Vacuum System Bake-Out Unit

This article concerns a portable heating unit for "baking out" a vacuum system. The unit features an array of infrared lamps mounted for portable use in vacuum systems, a controllable power supply for energizing the lamp, and a temperature control responsive to vacuum system temperatures for regulating the power to the lamps.

In certain vacuum systems, it is necessary to "bake" the system by heating it to a specified temperature after a tooling and bell jar change. The "bake:" is done to drive off contaminants, such as water vapor, prior to product processing. This "bake" process is normally accomplished by installing permanent lamp assemblies with associated hardware and controls. The unit of this article utilizes the standard components, arrayed in a portable assembly to permit servicing of many vacuum systems. The lamps are mounted on a base which can be inserted into almost any vacuum bell jar. The lamps are connected by power cable to a standard proportional controller and power supply, utilizing a standard 2-3/4" conflat flange with a standard high current feedthrough (which is also a part of this unit). The entire unit can be hooked up within 1/4 hour and uses a 50-amp receptacle on a 208-volt bus bar.

The portable unit cost is only a fraction of the cost of a permanent unit and requires no cleaning or rebuild after use.
