Clamping Small Parts with Green Bisque Ceramic

To apply termination metallurgy on fired ceramic blanks, a planar processing carrier compatible with the chemical/thermal processes is required.

Fired ceramic blanks are clamped (Figs. 1 and 2) by shrinking green or bisque fired ceramic of the same material about the blanks. The same material is used to assure that clamping is maintained through thermal excursions.

Fired discrete capacitor blanks, or fired masterslice of capacitor blanks, can be clamped for subsequent processing. The clamping ceramic may be scribed for part breakout, or masterslice parts may be ultrasonically or E-beam machined out.
