Self Adjusting Nut for Use on Lead Screw

This self-adjusting nut assembly permits a simple and reliable backlash-free lead screw arrangement compensating frictional wear on the threads of the lead screw.

The assembly comprises two nuts 2 and 3 mounted with a narrow spacing on lead screw 1. Ring 5 is attached to nut 2 and ring 6 to nut 3. Mounting ring 4, which attaches to the item to be moved by the lead screw arrangement, is also fixed to nut 3.

A number of studs 7 and S are arranged on the periphery of nuts 2 and 3. Spiral springs 9 are tensioned, axially forcing nuts 2 and 3 towards each other. Different stiffness and torque characteristics of the assembly can be obtained by selecting different spiral springs 9.
