Relatively thick shipping pallets are achieved having a cellular internal lamination for weight and cost reduction. The pallet will be mounted inside a cellular packing element, and the increased width distributes edge forces so as to reduce cutting action by the pallet.

In both Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the central member 1 is expanded polyethylene of 6 to 9 pounds per cu. ft. or polystyrene of 2 to 4 pounds per cu. ft. Solid sheets 3 are bonded to each side of member 1 to form a lamination. Small holes 5 receive bolts to bind a machine to be shipped to the pallet.

Outer sheets 3 reinforce the pallet against puncture by the bolts in holes 5. Sheets 3 also contribute to the overall strength of the pallet, which has moderate flexibility when in use to provide added cushioning.

The material of sheets 3 may be solid sheet plastic, in which embodiment they may be joined to central member 1 by thermal fusing or by a suitable adhesive. The material of sheets 3 may be a solid fiber bonded by a thermoset resin, in which embodiment they are joined to central member 1 by an adhesive. To reinforce the bonds, the lamination may be enclosed in an elastic or heat- shrunk netting 7, as shown in Fig. 2.

These pallets may be light-weight and low in material and other costs. The substantial thickness provides a large enough bearing area around the sides to avoid the knife-like cutting tendency of a thinner edge.
