Abstract

Bands of cartridges are mounted vertically in a circular segment, with a plurality of the bands forming a carrousel. Each carrousel is supported independently of the others, and is driven through 360 degrees by a stepper motor. The open center, defined by the stacked carrousels, permit two picker heads to move vertically to all carrousels. Each picker head operates independently of the other, and services one drive.

Tape Cartridge Library System

Bands of cartridges are mounted vertically in a circular segment, with a plurality of the bands forming a carrousel. Each carrousel is supported independently of the others, and is driven through 360 degrees by a stepper motor. The open center, defined by the stacked carrousels, permit two picker heads to move vertically to all carrousels. Each picker head operates independently of the other, and services one drive.

As shown in the figure, a plurality of carrousels 1 are located below two drive units 2 and 3, with a plurality of carrousels 4 located above the drive units. Each carrousel includes a plurality of baskets 5, with each basket containing a plurality of cartridges 6.

Two picker arms 7 are located opposite the drives for removing the cartridges 6 from a selected carrousel and for urging the cartridges 6 into the drive for a sensing operation. Each picker arm has two degrees of freedom, one vertically through all carrousels and one horizontally for extracting and inserting cartridges from any carrousel into one drive.

In operation, the required carrousel turns to position the selected cartridge in line with either picker arm 7. The actuated picker arm advances vertically, extracting the selected cartridge from the carrousel, then moves vertically to align with the selected drive, and inserts the cartridge in the drive. In the reverse action, the same picker arm extracts the cartridge from the drive and re-inserts it in the ca...
