Apparatus is shown and described for both manual and automatic adjustment of the size of the narrow gap between a wire matrix printhead and the platen. In a wire matrix printer for printing multipart forms and documents of various thicknesses, machine tolerances at the interface between the printhead and the platen leave little adjustment range for deviation in form thickness.

This article describes an apparatus for adjusting the gap 2 between platen 4 and matrix printhead 5. The assembly comprises a molded eccentric cam 6, an interlocking manual adjustment actuator 8, and an interlocking member 10 which is connected to solenoid 12. All three interlocking members 6, 8 and 10 are assembled on a shaft 14 which is mounted in adjustable bracket on the escapement carrier (not shown). Eccentric cam 6 is provided on either side with appropriately formed depressions to mate with projections on the member 10 and manual adjustment actuator 8.

Initial gap adjustment is effected during printer assembly and is chosen such that the manual adjustment lever 18 is at its 0 or mid-range position. The manual adjustment allows a plurality of settings on either side from the 0 setting which moves the printhead a fixed distance for each step because of the printhead carrier cam 6 interface. In this way, the operator of the printer is allowed to adjust for the best print quality on a given thickness form.
