Abstract

With the extensive proliferation of word processing terminals in the business equipment field, there has been a trend in this field to link such word processors to a wide variety of data processing equipment so that the word processing terminal may communicate with the data processor and make use of the data processor's extensive storage, archival, library services and computing capabilities. Since the equipment with which any standard word processors sold to the field may have to communicate is quite wide and variable, the present expedient provides for a situation wherein a host data processor may not have sufficient buffer space to practically handle the burst of data sent to the data processor from the word processing terminal.

With the extensive proliferation of word processing terminals in the business equipment field, there has been a trend in this field to link such word processors to a wide variety of data processing equipment so that the word processing terminal may communicate with the data processor and make use of the data processor's extensive storage, archival, library services and computing capabilities. Since the equipment with which any standard word processors sold to the field may have to communicate is quite wide and variable, the present expedient provides for a situation wherein a host data processor may not have sufficient buffer space to practically handle the burst of data sent to the data processor from the word processing terminal. Consequently, the present expedient offers word processor output pacing wherein the operator can select the appropriate output bit rate to thereby give the host data processor control over the burst of data sent from the word processing terminal. The following example is provided.
