Document Sensor

This article suggests replacing separate registration sensors at each registration edge with a single optical registration sensor at the corner of the intersection of the two registration edges.

The figure shows a document 11 moving to the left along a bottom registration edge to stop at a vertical registration edge. Sensor 15, often a mechanical finger which is moved by the document, indicates that document 11 is registered against the bottom edge. Likewise, sensor 13 indicates that the document is registered against the vertical registration edge. These two sensors can be replaced by a single optical sensor 17 located in the corner at the intersection of the two registration edges. A mechanical finger-type sensor is not practical at location 17 because its activation would then be dependent upon the rigidity of the document which is not as rigid as its corner.
