Abstract

Data encoded on magnetic stripe 1 by differential spacing between successive transitions 2, 3, 4 is reliably read at variable scanning speeds by the use of a pair of transducing elements 5 and 6. As element 5 moves between transitions 3 and 4, element 6 will move between transitions 2 and 3. The distance between transitions 3 and 4 is thus determined by the relative timing of outputs by elements 5 and 6.

The read head 7 in Fig. 1 is adjustable by rotation to present different spacings 8 between the transducers 5 and 6, in order to read recordings of different bit densities. The read head 9 of Fig. 2 has a primary transducing element 10 and several secondary elements 11, 12, 13, etc. Switch 14 selects one of the secondary elements 11, 12, 13 to cooperate with the primary element 10, according to the bit-density to be read.
