Flux Compensated DC DC Transformer

This article describes a transformer arrangement that permits the size of a telephone line transformer to be reduced. The arrangement comprises a low frequency AC transformer series connected with a switched DC-DC transformer.

Referring to the figure, T1 designates a low frequency AC transformer which is series connected with a switched DC-DC transformer T2. The latter has its primary winding coupled to switching transistors Q1 and Q2 and its secondary winding coupled to a diode bridge in a well-known manner. Transformer T1 passes the AC signals, while transformer T2 passes the DC signal provided by the DC source. By making the two transformers with the same transfer ratio, the transformer arrangement shown in the figure is perfectly flux-compensated.
