Variable Rate Sheet Supply for a Copier

Controls detect when paper fed from an external stack cannot be accepted by a copier and either slows down or stops feeding until the copier returns to normal operation.

In Fig. 1, paper sheet feeder 1 supplies paper 2 to copier 3 semi automatic document feed (SADF) 4 at a velocity and feed rate selectable by a user. The sheet feeder monitors the copier' s entry Rate signal line 5 which indicates that a sheet was fed into the copier.

Initially, the feeder clears its own paper path and feeds a single sheet 2 to the copier 3 SADF 4. In Fig. 2, main control 9 sends a velocity command on line 10 to motor controls 11 and 12 (connected to two drive motors 14 and 13, respectively). Velocity sensing tachometers 15 and 16 enable motor controls 11 and 12 to hold the paper velocity at the nominal value specified by the velocity command on line 10. Jam detection 7 uses tachometer 16 output to monitor inputs from entry gate signal 5 and sheet sensors 8 to provide an internal jam alert status on output 17, an external jam alert status on output 18, or both.
