Abstract

High viscosity elastomers, of the type used to injection mold the hot roll of a xerographic fuser, are mixed, at low flow rates, by employing a static mixer whose inner, tubular walls have been roughened. This static mixer may be located in-line with the injection molding machine.

Static Mixer

High viscosity elastomers, of the type used to injection mold the hot roll of a xerographic fuser, are mixed, at low flow rates, by employing a static mixer whose inner, tubular walls have been roughened. This static mixer may be located in-line with the injection molding machine.

The use of a large diameter static mixer is desirable because less pressure drop occurs across the mixer and less energy is expended in mixing the elastomer. However, laminar flow tends to occur at the large diameter tube walls, particularly at low flow rates of high viscosity elastomers. The result is inadequate mixing.

Roughening of the static mixer' s tube wall, as by mechanical scoring, breaks up the laminar flow and provides complete mixing of the elastomer.
