Connector Orientation Method

A magnetic field can be used to maintain alignment of electrical connectors in a circuit board when a neighboring connector is being unsoldered.

Referring to the figure, electromagnets 1 and 2, energized by power source 3, establish a vertical magnetic flux field surrounding connectors 4 that are arranged in close proximity to one another. This field maintains the orientation of the connectors bv preventing rotation while a connector, such as 5, is being unsoldered by hot gas from nozzle 6 and then removed by grip head 7. Although the hot gas softens the solder at the base of adjacent connectors, the magnetic field assures their proper alignment during the unsoldering period. The connectors may be made of a magnetic material or be merely plated with such a material.
