In a microprocessor-controlled small printer, a single switch is operative either to feed a sheet of paper to a first line printing position during initial paper insertion or to feed the sheet by a single line.

Referring to the figure, a sheet of paper 1 is placed in a stand 2. For initial paper insertion, an operator depresses a particular switch 10 on an operator panel 9 for a relatively long time. Detecting that the switch 10 is being depressed for a time that is longer than a predetermined time length, a microprocessor 8 drives a motor 6 to move a carrier 5 supporting a printhead 4 along a platen 3, thereby centering the printhead 4 with respect to the width of the sheet 1.

Then, the microprocessor 8 drives another motor 7 to rotate the platen 3 for feeding the sheet 1. As the rotation of the platen 3 continues, the leading edge of the sheet 1 passes by the printhead 4. The sheet 1 is fed by a distance which is predetermined so that a first print line on the sheet 1 is eventually positioned opposite the printhead 4. After completing the feeding, the microprocessor operates the motor 6 again to return the printhead 4 to a home position.

On the other hand, when the operator depresses the switch 10 for a relatively short time that is shorter than the predetermined time length, the microprocessor 8 drives the motor 7 to feed the sheet 1 by a single line.
