Flexible Disk Drive Head Mounting

A tool accurately locates a flexible disk drive's head mount relative to the drive's spindle.

Head locator mounting tool 10 (Fig. 1) includes a cylindrical boss 11 which seats in the disk drive's spindle 12 (Fig. 2). The tool's extending arm 13 includes a number of spring fingers 14 which are spread by actuator 15 when spring member 16 is manually pushed down, as shown in Fig. 1. In the Fig. 1 position, head mount 17 can be located between spring fingers 14, and is held thereby, as shown in Fig. 2. The Fig. 2 position is, for example, the track-22 position of a flexible disk drivels multi-tracK format.

A locator member 18 is mounted to arm 13, and includes a number of locator pads 19 which mate with surfaces 20 carried by head mount 17.

The flexible disk's spin-plane is perpendicular to the plane of Fig. 1, and is represented by line 21. The dimension "B" of Figs. 1 and 2 accurately controls the amount by which the disk drive's head (which is mounted on surfaces 20) penetrates the flexible disk's spinplane.

When tool 10 is mounted to spindle 12, as shown in Fig. 2, the three mounting lugs 22 of head mount 17 enter three openings formed in the disk drive's movable head carriage 23. At this time head carriage 23 is positioned as it will be in order to read track-22 of a flexible disk. The head mount is now clamped to the head carriage, as by the use of glue.
