A journal bearing employs a magnetic field to contain lubricant, thereby eliminating the need for ball bearings or air bearings.

As shown in Fig. 1, the bearing is comprised of an outer housing which can be installed in a disk file, such as depicted in Fig. 2. The spindle shaft is capable of receiving a direct current motor on one end and a clamp-on disk/hub assembly on the other. The magnetic lubricant seals on each end contain the lubricant which supports the shaft radially on an elastohydrodynamic film (EHD). A similar EHD film is provided by the magnetic lubricant seals.

The overall principle is similar to a self generating gas bearing, but is different in that the stiffness offered by the fluid is greater and the lubricant volume is a "closed" system. Start/stop exposure is very limited since the system acts as a normal journal bearing. The unwanted attributes of rolling element bearings, such as ball drop, nonrepeatible run-out and bearing noise, are diminished or eliminated.
