Vacuum Belt Picker Separator

There is shown and described a picker separator for cut sheets using a moving belt having an internal vacuum channel. The belt functions as both a vacuum application means and a transport means.

Fig. 1 shows the belt which is comprised of two layers. The inner layer 1 is of molded plastic or elastomer formed in one thickness for a portion of its length and a second thinner portion. Opening 2 is provided in layer 1 immediately adjacent the beginning of the thinner portion 3. Belt layer 1 is completely enclosed within outer layer 4 to hereby form an internal chamber 5. Holes 6 are located in outer layer 4 over chamber 5. Alternatively, opening 2 could be placed in outer belt layer 4 and inner belt layer 1 would be a closed loop.

Fig. 2. is a sectional view of a picker separator device using the belt structure of Fig. 1. Belt 4 is driven counterclockwise by drive roller 8 backed up by roller
10. Roller 12 is provided to guide belt 4 as it travels around arcuate guide member 16. Guide 16 includes vacuum channel 18 connected to outlet port 22 in the surface of guide 16.

The configuration shown in Fig. 2 represents the start of a sheet-pick operation. When vacuum is applied through guide 16 and thence through internal channel 5 to belt outlet holes 6, the topmost sheet in stack 24 is attracted to belt 4. At the same time, the belt drive roller 8 is driven clockwise, causing the topmost sheet in stack 24 to move to the right as the belt trav...
