Abstract

A technology that is becoming increasingly important throughout the business community is electronic document distribution, e.g., electronic mail which utilizes a network of communicating text or word processors. The present system relates to the capability of a communicating word processor to summarize what is in a queue at a particular distribution point in the electronic distribution network and to send this summary to a remote receiving terminal which may also be a communicating text processor. The system assumes that an operator will require a summarized form of distribution status in order to obtain an immediate overview of the information available for any particular session.

Electronic Document Distribution Provision for Summarizing Distribution Information

Without access to such summarized information, the only means available to the operator for determining information at a particular distribution node would be to request the distribution node to create a document containing a detailed list of the distribution status information. By providing such summarized information, the system allows the operator not only to critically prioritize and plan the sending and receiving of documents but also gives the operator the ability to determine whether there is a need to request further details.

With reference to Fig. 1, in obtaining a distribution summary, the operator first selects from the menu shown on the word processor screen of Fig. 1 item i "Obtain Distribution Information". Upon entering this selection, the display terminal then presents to the operator the display menu shown in Fig. 2 which offers to the operator in addition to a selection of information, a choice as to whether the operator wants the whole document or a summary.

Upon selecting a summary, the operator receives a summary of the documents in a selected information area. For example, he receives the following information: "Obtain Distribution Information Sum...
