Abstract

A matrix printer includes a DC motor utilized to effect the proper feeding and positioning of a print ribbon and printhead during printing and print correction. A disc cam is responsive to motor rotation and includes specially shaped grooves which control mechanical motion and electrical contacts which provide feedback to a microprocessor controlling the printer operation.

A matrix printer includes a DC motor utilized to effect the proper feeding and positioning of a print ribbon and printhead during printing and print correction. A disc cam is responsive to motor rotation and includes specially shaped grooves which control mechanical motion and electrical contacts which provide feedback to a microprocessor controlling the printer operation.

A thermal matrix printer 11 (Fig. 1) includes a printhead 13 and print ribbon 15 utilized to print on document 17 wrapped about platen 19. The ribbon 15 is incremented by a ribbon feed device 21 which is actuated to effect rotation of the ribbon feed rollers 23. The printhead 13 is rotated against the platen 19 to effect printing and away from the platen 19 to allow operator viewing of the print line. Additionally, a correction presser bar 25 is rotated against the platen 19 during correction operations and away from the platen 19 during normal print operations or when the printhead 13 is located away from the platen 19.

The DC motor 31 is rotated to effect positioning of the printhead 13 and the correction presser bar 25 and also to control the turn on and turn off of the ribbon feed 21. The motor 31 is connected through gears 33 and 35 to the disc 37 which contains a groove cam 39 controlling the position of the printhead 13 and correction presser bar 25 through the follower 41.
