Abstract

During the typing and subsequent playout of documents on word processing devices, the operator often adjusts the text within new margin boundaries or makes substantial revisions to the text, causing various words thereof to change their location within the print lines. During playout, the operator has the option of being prompted to make hyphenation decisions on words which would normally span across the right margin boundary. It is known to insert such syllable hyphens and to retain them within the stored word of text even when the printed word thereafter does not span the right margin boundary, thus saving the operator from hyphenating the same word at the same place within the word multiple times when the text is revised on multiple occasions.

This article describes a word processing technique which avoids requiring an operator to hyphenate multiple occurrences of a word within a document at the same place within the word.

Using a text revision word processing device such as the IBM Model 75 Electronic typewriter, a phantom hyphen is keyed into a word of adjusted text which spans a margin boundary.
