This is an optical system for obtaining the slider position relative to a disk. A light source and sensor are carried on a monolithic GaAs structure.

In Fig. l, a slider l0 for a magnetic disk recording system carries a GaAs device including a light-emitting diode (LED) with a monolithic structure etched or cut into two separate devices including a detector D and an emitter E. The active layers of the emitter E and detector D are in the same plane. Light from the emitter E travels directly to detector D and also to the surface S of magnetic recording disk ll which carries an integral optical pattern l2. Light reflected from the disk surface S is transmitted back through the emitter E to the detector D. The advantage is reduced power consumption since the power to the emitter E is only enough to provide sufficient light and to make the emitter E sufficiently transparent to the reflected light. For optimum performance, the sequence of layers within the LED are preferably much like a laser.

Alternatively, in Fig. 2A slider l0' carries a separate LED emitter E' and detector D' fashioned in the shape of a "V" so that light reflected from the pattern l2' on disk surface S' does not need to be transmitted back through the detector D'. The device can be a monolithic structure in this case also. The advantage of this scheme is reduced consumption of power. Instead of the arrangement of Fig. 2A, in Fig. 2B slid...
