Abstract

Word processing terminals are being increasingly used in electronic document distribution networks. When a text processing terminal is to be used in such a fashion, it is conventional to initiate or return to a transmission, i.e., communication session. In order to transmit from a text processing terminal, it is necessary to switch from a text processing session to a transmission session wherein the system has the transmission capability, as distinguished from the native text processing sessions wherein the system performs its text processing operations. In order to conventionally initiate such transmission sessions, the operator must take the necessary steps to select an appropriate receiving node or nodes and to establish a communications linkage between the transmitting Displaywriter and the selected nodes.

Electronic Document Distribution Between Text Processing Terminals Expedients for Modifying Material to Be Transmitted or Transmission Conditions

Conventionally, it is during these transmission sessions that queues of the documents to be transmitted are established, changed or developed.

In accordance with the present expedient, it is not necessary to initiate or switch to a transmission session in order to add to, remove from, or otherwise alter the transmission queue. The operating program for the communication mode (i.e., communication program diskette) is transferred from the appropriate diskette memory onto the operating RAM (random-access memory) for the word processor. Then, whatever action is to be taken with respect to the queue is carried out without taking any further steps to establish a communication session. Next, the altered queue, together with the transmission operating program, is restored on the appropriate communications program diskette, after which the text processing operational program is reentered into the RAM memory from its appropriate pr...
