A pair of algorithms are described that enable a formatting of the sector assignments on a multiple-platter multiple-head disk storage device to obtain a maximum data transfer rate to or from the storage device.

The first algorithm maps the physical sector number (PSN) and head number (HD) to the proper logical sector number (LSN). This algorithm is:

The second algorithm maps the LSN to the proper PSN. This algorithm is:

Both algorithms have been tested and are valid for logical sector numbers from zero through 699, physical sector numbers from zero through 49, head numbers from zero through 13 and a head switchingdelay of about 1/14th of a sector length.
