Abstract

Jam recovery time for a high-speed reader/sorter is improved by diverting documents destined for the jam site to a standard reject pocket which for other reasons contains documents requiring manual attention. A user-settable threshold permits a selected number of such documents to pass to the jam site rather than be diverted to the reject bin, where desired.

Variable Threshold Jam Processing

Jam recovery time for a high-speed reader/sorter is improved by diverting documents destined for the jam site to a standard reject pocket which for other reasons contains documents requiring manual attention. A user-settable threshold permits a selected number of such documents to pass to the jam site rather than be diverted to the reject bin, where desired.

Reader/sorter transport 10 has an operating section 11 and a sorter section 12 which, at any given time, contains a series of documents 13 in process. As each document 13 passes read station 14, its position and destination are recorded in memory 15 for control of the machine. Upon detection of a jam incident, for example, at sorter bin 16, controller 17 immediately determines which of the documents 13 in process in operating section 11 are destined to go to or past the jam site. The destination for these documents, as stored in memory 15, is changed to indicate reject pocket R as the destination.

Since documents in process may have been otherwise fully processed by operations such as microfilm unit 19, it may be preferable to allow some documents to accumulate at jam site 16 rather than have them intercepted at reject pocket R. Documents collected from the jam by the operator can be immediately out-processed by manual sorting into their selected bins. To permit this option, a threshold value is stored by the user in register 20. Upon the detection of a jam incident, controll...
