Audio Display Interface

The described concept provides audio as an alternative interface to the operator of a word processing terminal or the like.

In the main memory of the system in which this concept is implemented, information is stored to provide menus, information and other screen images. Additionally, a digitized audio generator is provided. The data stream to the terminal, whether direct or communicated, comprises mixed digital information, for both the visual display and audio messages.

Providing audio prompts has the advantage of alerting the operator to special urgent situations requiring attention without interfering with the display. A further implementation includes providing a Help menu from which the operator can make a selection which then accesses an audio response library and places the appropriate message in the mixed data stream.
