This publication describes a structure used to sense motion in crowded, delicate mechanisms.

To diagnose the problems that occur in dot-matrix and other actuators used in impact printing, it is often necessary to sense the motion of fine mechanical components in situ . The crowded conditions make the task difficult. Furthermore, minimal disturbance should be caused on the system under study, such as the print "head" of a wire matrix printer. The system proposed here has some important advantages over other wire watchers in which the lack of imaging optics makes the instrument less sensitive and nonlinear in its response.

The instrument is shown in the drawing. A light source l, not necessarily coherent or collimated, illuminates object 2 of which we wish to measure the motion transverse to the axis of the light source. The object 2 is imaged by a glass rod 3 with radially graded index of refraction (such as a SELFOC* rod) onto a slit 5. The light transmitted is measured with photodiode 4, shown in the drawing with an integral preamplifier.

For initial setup and alignment the photodiode/operational amplifier can be made detachable to permit viewing with a microscope.

Alternatively, or when a measurement with reflected light is to be made, a beamsplitter (B.S.) is positioned between the SELFOC rod and the detector. The illuminating light is then introduced from the side (as is often done in microscope illumination).
