Abstract

An audit trail is recorded directly on a document 10 that passes through one of a set of random work stations by printing a transaction identification 11, 12, 13 at each work station in one of a predefined set of print positions 14. Code marks 15 are printed in a common field position 16 to indicate by their vertical height which of the fields 14 was the last to be printed. At each work station, the location and vertical height of the last mark 15 is read by reader 17. A printer 18, e.g., ink jet, is controlled to print the next progressively longer mark 15 adjusted to have its lower edge aligned with the previous mark 15. The height of the vertical mark 15 which was read is uniquely associated with one of the positions 14. The printer 18 thus is controlled to print audit information in that next available field.
