Direct Acoustic Detection of Energy Loss of Particle Beams

An acoustic detector for measuring the energy loss of particles directly is shown in the drawing.

An incident monochromatic electron beam 10 of 30 keV electrons from an electron beam gun 12 irradiates the thin film sample 14. A small amount of energy of each electron is deposited in the sample. This deposited energy causes local heating and subsequently, via a transient thermal expansion, creates a sound pulse 15 which is detected by an acoustic detector 16. The acoustic detector may be a piezoelectric transducer or a piezoelectric film.
