Abstract

A miniature passive display, e.g., electrochromic or liquid crystal, is illuminated and projected through a wide aperture lens onto a screen. A small proportion of the projected light is separated from light directed towards the screen by means of a small mirror or a mirror with a small central aperture. This separated light is directed onto a sensitive photographic film to record an image of the display. The relatively small aperture of the recording system as opposed to the display system ensures that the bulk of the illumination available reaches the screen. It also increases the depth-of-field of the recording system and thereby increases the tolerance on film position. The basic components of one such display/printer system are shown in Fig.

The basic components of one such display/printer system are shown in Fig. 1, where the miniature display 1 is projected by lens 2 via mirror 3 onto a screen 4. A small aperture 5 in mirror 3 allows approximately 1% of the incident light to pass undeviated to a photographic film 6. The film is of a sensitive type, such as Polaroid 667. Optionally, the system may include a further aperture stop 7 in addition to the stop defined by aperture 5. A color filter 8 may also be employed to increase the contrast available from certain types of display. Finally, a further low-power lens 9 may be employed in the display optical system if it is desired to increase the size of the displayed image relative to the recorded one.
