Abstract

Current gauges used for measuring the thickness of a disk as it is being ground use carbide-tipped probes and an air gauge, as shown in Fig. 1. It is proposed here to replace the conventional probes with a ball probe, as shown in Fig. 2. Ball 11 in the probe is free to rotate in the probe housing 12, and small openings 12a may be provided therein to allow the grinding or polishing fluid to lubricate ball 11.
