Abstract

In the present EDD (Electronic Document Distribution) network for word processor display terminals, documents to be considered for interchange are normally retained at the local word processor workstation or archived in a remote document library. Documents are placed in a remote document library for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that limited-resource workstations, such as a display word processor, cannot easily accommodate large documents. A problem exists in that documents previously archived in a remote document library cannot be easily distributed. In general, once a document has been archived, it must first be retrieved from the remote document library to the local workstation. Once at the local workstation it may be distributed through the EDD network.

Electronic DOCUMENT Distribution by Relative Reference

Some EDD terminals (those having hard file disk capability) have chosen to overcome this problem by retaining the unique library identifier of the document at the local workstation. The operator may then distribute the document directly from the library by referencing the unique identifier. An expedient of the present system involves a concept of relative reference. This concept describes a special relationship between a designated document and its existence (location) in a remote document library. This relationship allows the word processor workstation operator to perform a search of the remote document library for the purposes of locating one or more documents and, upon the confirmation of existence, request the distribution of those documents through the EDD network. The system allows the currently signed-on user to use this special relationship.

A typical example is given to illustrate the distribution of a document from the library in accordance with the present invention. For the purpose of this invention the focus of this example should be on the Search Result List Identifier. To prepare the distribute library document command, the operator has the use of at least three menus. The first of these menus (the Distribute Document from Library menu) allows the operator to specify the library document to be distributed. The second menu (the Distribute Document menu) allows the operator to alter the default distribution options. This menu also allows the operator to enter a message of up to eighty characters that will be distributed with the document. The remaining menus (Distribution List and Stored Distribution List) provide the menus for the operator to specify recipients of the document. As an illustration, the Distribute Document from Library menu is displayed below. This menu allows the operator to specify the library document that is to be distributed.
